Taking a Break

Kelly  |  July 28

I’m outta here for the next week and I will be taking a much, much needed break this week. Stay tuned for a batch of new cocktails recipes, a second look from the Grecian shoot I did with Jose Villa, and, of course, more pretty flowers than you can shake a stick at. And thank you guys for your kind words. It really means a lot.

  2. Maybe you should hop on over to this side of the pond? Yeh. Yah. Good ideas? I think so!

  3. It looks like I’m one of the only florists who has commented, so here goes. It’s August: burn-out time. Sounds like you’re right on schedule. From someone who has been running their own floral business for 11 years, I can’t say it gets MUCH easier! Just when you think you’ve got it wired, you need new props, a bigger space, a better website, your best assistant gets a different job, your taxes are higher than you expected, some new cool florists move into town and take your business, and ohGodforbid you have a baby! Do NOT throw a baby into the mix, you have been warned. Or do anything else that takes away from your 20-hour-a-day ‘dream career,’ like have meaningful relationships or hobbies or exercise or….

Running a creative business is, I’m going to say it, soul-sucking. When you measure your success and self-worth by tweets, blog hits, magazine publications, and your paycheck, you will almost always feel like crapola. It’s just a no-win.

You can keep running this awesome creative business but you have to find a different way to feel peaceful and good about being Kelly. And you will find a way to make a decent paycheck (decent isn’t the same as stellar–give yourself some time).

As each year passes in this industry, I am less and less interested in who I am as a Santa Barbara floral designer. I am much more interested in who I am as a wife, mother, friend, and plain ol’ human being. And yet I continue to have business, and earn a decent paycheck :)
