5 Flower Alternatives to Roses for Valentine’s Day

Kelly
January 30

With valentine’s day right around the corner, I thought it would be a good idea to give some alternative flower ideas to the tried and true (and super boring) red roses. Personally, I hate red roses (especially when paired with baby’s breathe, barf!) and of course all colors of roses get stupid expensive this time year.

So what are your alternatives? First up, one of my all time favorite flowers, hellebore. Its delicate and feminine and its totally in season. When you get them, put on a pot of water and bring to just under a boil. Snip your hellebore to the desired length and then dip into the hot water. This will give them a much longer vase life. And you can see how to recreate this arrangement right here.

Flowering branches are super pretty, their height is dramatic and they last a long time. If you go this route, find a pretty tall glass vase to display them in. Pull out a hammer (yes, a hammer) and smash the bottom of the stems. This allows for more water uptake. And, it takes a little while to get these guys to open, so plan on picking them up a week in advance.

Lilac with its multiple tiny blooms and fragance is a lovely alternative to red roses. Like with flower branches, lilacs have a woody stem and do well when their stems are smashed with a hammer. More tips for working with lilac can be found right here.

Of course, if you abhor the idea of the waste that is the very nature of cut flowers, how about a succulent in a pretty pot? They’re readily available at your local hardware store or nursery. Tuck in a little note in and wrap with rustic burlap for an easy DIY touch.

And if you’re special someone is a foodie/all natural type, how about a window box planted with their favorite herbs? It would certainly be a pretty (and tasty) present. You can see the full how to here.

Engagement: Love over Coffee & Tarts

Kelly
January 23

Today I’m so excited to share our very own “On the Rocks” editor, Melissa, engagement pictures! Shot in LA by my girl Kirsten of Beaux Arts Photographie, Kirsten picked this adorable cafe to capture their love over coffee & tarts…

Melissa and Jeff are getting married this April and we’re designing a decidedly glamorous and sparkly affair.

Congrats you two!

My New Year’s Eve + Resolutions (finally)

Kelly
January 10

I spent New Year’s Eve with a few close friends. We dressed up for the hell of it, drank whiskey out of decanters (left over wedding decor), Mira wore a sparkly necklace,  and we listened to lots of Kendrick Lamar. At midnight, we went outside and lit sparklers provided by Joy (left over from a wedding of her’s, we designers like to recycle). It was pretty much perfect.

I put off making resolutions because I wanted to marinate some ideas for a while and see what felt right. So here they are, in no particular order:

-Yoga, yoga, yoga. I’ve been going for almost a year to yoga soup (Jenni’s class) and I really want to master hand stand (I’m close) and scissors (a fancy pants arm balance)

-Ballet. I took classes on and off since I was 4 on and off but I haven’t been in well, more than a year. Time to dust off my tights and get going.

-Make pretty pictures + get crafty up in here. This is on going and last year I took the leap and started producing content for the blog. This year, I’m hoping to add video and more crafty goodness. Because, while I don’t blog about it often, I do a lot of craft projects for weddings and its high time I shared some of my tricks.

-Learn to stop judging my own self worth by the numbers… You see as a blogger, you hang your hat on page views, google rankings, twitter followers, facebook likes, pinterest followers etc etc. Its a very slippery slope when you can easily compare your numbers to the countless other bloggers out there. Its depressing and unhealthy and I need to stop it already.

-Break up with my phone. I’m making an effort to leave my phone at home when I go out to see friends or on errands. There’s no reason I need to check my email right-this-second, see how many re-pins I got, blah blah blah. Its not healthy for me mentally to always be linked in to work and I would much rather talk to someone, like in person, then email/tweet/facebook them. You know, actually socialize with people, not a monitor.

-Throw a party. A big one. Perhaps with some crafty or a flower arranging slant. Or maybe just drink wine and enjoy an al fresco dinner. I’m still undecided on this, I just think it would be fun to meet YOU and make some pretty things…

What are your resolutions? And what would you like to see more over here on the bloggity?

Get the Look: Downton Abbey’s Tabletop Style

Kelly
January 09

I am, like most of you, very much enamored with the amazing Downton Abbey. I’m obsessed with the set dressing and the old world elegance and I thought it would be fun to dissect the tabletop from the premier of season three.

La Tavola’s Cheju White linen, has that beautiful and classic damash pattern and paired with crisp white linens folded in a bishop hat napkin fold, and you’re pretty close to the formal place setting (you can learn to this napkin fold right here). While real silver candleabras probably won’t grace your table, you can pick up these Candelabras from Jamali Gardens (Town & Country also has them for rent). Add in some floral arrangement in classic silver urns filled with soft pink roses, plumosa, lavender, and verbena for that classic English feel. Use revere bowls (also avaliable for rent from Town & Country) and fill with pears, apples, and exotic pineapple. Finish off the look with silver menu holders and a hand calligraphed menu.

That’s a Wrap 2012!

Kelly
December 31

I can’t believe its time to say peace out to 2012 and hello to 2013. Seriously this year went by in one big blur and I’m happy to turn the page to a shiny new year, but first I gotta do my obligatory yearly wrap up. I produced and styled a crap ton of editorials along with a few pretty weddings here and there…

In February, I styled and produced the cover editorial for Rue with Jose Villa (see here and here).

In March, I shot the cover editorial for Mag Rouge with Elizabeth Messina and created some bouquets and a pretty table for the Wedding Chicks.

In April, Nancy Neil and I started shooting “Flower Chic” for the blog, starting with this clematis floral crown.

In May, I shot “Grecian Bridal Style” with Jose Villa (see here, and here). I also formed a new media company called 3 Chicks Media with Kim Wiseley of Love Mikana & Samantha Hutchinson of Could I Have That.

In June, it was all about weddings for me. The first one was up at Figeoura Mountain Farmhouse and is still unpublished (photographer was Aaron Delesie who I was honored to work with for the first time). You can see a pretty classic photo of the install right here. The second wedding was featured right here on Santa Barbara Chic and featured a “blooming” willow tree and soft romantic flowers.

In July, I produced my first food editorial for the blog with Anna Costa & Duo Events.

In August, I produced a three day “Farm to table” shoot with Karen Wise (still unpublished, but it should be out soon). And the 3 Chicks threw a sushi making party.

In September, I was working on a gorgeous wedding with Kirsten from Beaux Arts when I got the word we be moving to a beautiful 1925 craftsman style bungalow! (This wedding is also unpublished as of yet.) I also produced a chocolate editorial with Josh Gruetzmacher which was one of my favorites editorials of the year.

October was a blur of unpacking, organization, and decorating… Here’s a little corner of our new yard:

In November, I designed two tabletops for the upcoming holiday season featuring Town & Country Event Rentals. The first, a gray and persimmon thanksgiving table and the second, an elegant red and gray holiday table with cotton. My husband, Sam, made some food for his first contributing posts to the blog, a trio of holiday baking ideas (here, here, and here).

In December, I had just one mini shoot for this sinful eggnog treat with Anna Costa. My sister also came home for the holidays and we toured Heart Castle and then celebrated the holidays in the Bay Area.

Here’s how my year broke down:

276 blog posts of which,

- 19 “Flower Chic” posts

- 41 “On the Rocks” cocktail posts

- 14 real Santa Barbara weddings featuring the best local vendors

- 12 Food stories & recipes

Flower Chic: Making a Merry & Bright Floral Crown

Kelly
December 19

I’m so excited to share this merry floral crown idea that is featured in the current issue of Flutter Magazine. You can check out the feature here and here’s how to re-create the look yourself.

First up, lets assemble the materials. You will need:

- straight wire

- floral wire

- pretty ribbon

- floral tape

- floral shears

- flowers, I’m using red dahlias, orange ranunuclus and dusty miller

Begin by making mini bunches of flowers and tie them together with floral tape.

Take the straight wire and cut to about 9″. Attach ribbon with a glue gun on either end so you can tie the floral headdress around your head.

Then, working in one direction, attach you flower bundles until you’ve completely covered the wire.

And ta da! You’re done, now you can sport flowers in your hair whenever you feel like. Enjoy!
